I often get asked this question & my reply is always this – Bowen Therapy can treat you & your whole system. It is a holistic bodywork technique which focuses on balancing the body rather than specific conditions. Furthermore, it would be illegal & misleading to say “Bowen Therapy can treat this condition or that condition”.
That said, each Bowen Therapy session allows the brain chance to focus on areas of the body that may be imbalanced. When tensions & restrictions in the musculoskeletal system are released, there can be a cascade of releases throughout the body! Clients are often surprised when an issue they have lived with for years, to the point of being something they have forgotten about, resolves itself as well as the issue they walked in with!
How do I know Bowen Therapy will help my pain?
What works well for one person may take more time for their friend with the exact same symptoms – pain is a very subjective thing. Produced in the brain, the feeling of pain is often-time more to do with the messages being relayed between the nervous system & the body than a specific issue.
Pain can be influenced by many factors such as:
- diet
- personality
- lifestyle
- life experiences & trauma
- mood & emotional issues
- sociocultural factors
- hydration levels
- general health levels
- medical disorders
- stress levels
Any one of these factors can affect how a person experiences pain.
As an example, I may see a client with lower back pain who responds well to their sessions & feels a distinct decrease in pain levels over a short period. My next client may also be feeling pain in the exact same place in the lower back but because they are having a rubbish time at the moment – financial worries, job insecurity & grief over a lost loved one – but their outcomes may be coming at a slower pace, which can be frustrating for some.
What happens if my pain is slow to resolve?
Bowen Therapy is such a great non-invasive practice, but it is never intended as a quick fix. If pain is slow to resolve, there is always a reason why, but it is my duty to help find out why.
When a client’s pain issues are taking longer to resolve they may be in need of more sessions than normal. They may benefit from referral to another practitioner who could help with other issues, such as mental health, digestive health, diet etc, alongside their bodywork sessions. Occasionally I may feel the need to refer an individual back to their GP for further investigation
What is the main aim of Bowen Therapy?
To conclude, it’s less about what can be treated & more about what outcomes you can expect – relief from pain, reduction in pain levels, relief from restricted movement, reduction in tension or stiffness, restored function, increased range of movement & a boost to overall wellbeing are what we aim for rather than treating the specifics.
